I was called to be an artist. And as an old old midwife said to me "If the Lord wants you to do something, you won't have no good luck' til you do." So, here I am, sharing what I love, longing to illuminate the work of art, which is everywhere.
Charlotte, I have three books published and they are on Amazon. My interest is Edisto Island, SC and all I can get recorded about things that are not clearly understood about Edisto. I am interested in any things that deals with bringing out Edisto as a paradise worth visiting. My books may give you some ideas of what to paint about. The Blue House I know on Edisto is a plantation house that had girls my age that I was interested in back in the 1950s. I am 80 years old and was raised on Edisto Beach. Who know we may have interest in common. Send me a copy of your interesting painting. Who knows I may be able to use one of them in my writings. I am trying to record subjects that are not well recorded about Edisto. Right now I am working on slavery on Edisto. I hope you do well with your paintings. My books are going well or as well as I expected. So put a little color on this and that and see what happens. Oh, I grow fancy camellias. Talk about color – they have it in all their glory. My wife and I live on Store Creek and we have a glorious picture every morning as the sun comes up and when it goes down. Edisto has so many life pictures that it would take a life time to record them. (I am an interesting fellow. Come visit me and I’ll give you a tour of Edisto as I see it. Sam Lybrand
Dear Sam, thank you. I will go look for your books on Amazon! I lived on Edisto for two years, 09-11, Out on 2 acres adjacent to Frampton Creek. I knew your brother David, and I met you, I believe. I’m a provisional member of the Presbyterian Church there:) that was when the darling older gentleman and his wife were serving. I would be delighted to take a tour with you and hear your stories. My art is at With These Hands gallery, and I need to deliver some paintings soon. Also my ancestors are the McLeods from Edisto and I have recently found a graveyard up near Little Brittain Road, a King graveyard. That has McLeod ancestors of mine that are connected with the McLeod plantation in Charleston. I’ve done research on that genealogy for them. Maybe you are familiar with that?

Welcome to my blog about the Lowcountry of South Carolina, a place proud with beauty, history and art. Sometimes we feel a call, to be, to go, to do. So here I am writing about what I know, about the 'under glimmer' as the poet Basho, says, the way I have learned to see, to notice. I am inspired by, and talking about the history and art and culture of this place that has called me to herself. By the ancestors.
My background includes a degree in fine arts from a small private college in Florida, and before that, four years of all girls' boarding school in Asheville. I worked as a professional photographer, helped my children grow up, and now and I love seasoned things, good food, better conversation, beauty, my beloved and beautiful Italian Greyhound, Beau. Moved by the sacred places and stories of this beautiful historic land called the Lowcountry, I am here in spirit and I hope to infect you with my love of this place.
